CURATED RESIDENCIES

Extended deadline for submissions of applications for GuestRoomMaribor: Call out 2017

New deadline: 10th of April

International Artist-in-residence program GuestRoomMaribor was established in 2011 by Pekarna Magdalenske mreže (PMM) – a non governmental organization focused on independent cultural production in Maribor, Slovenia. PMM originates from the concept of creative and emancipatory physical and mental space, initially meant for activities of production, promotion of production and informal education in the fields of art, culture, youth work, civil society and active citizenship. The organisation’s activity is defined by the conceptual field of informal culture, subculture, deinstitutionalized culture, counter-culture, independent culture and urban culture, as well as social movements. In the context of contemporary art practices PMM represents an important generator of non-institutional and independent art practices; it encourages socially engaged art, hybrid and experimental artistic expressions and approaches.

If the primary idea of large number of Artist-in-residence programs is to create a possibility for the artists to create beyond their usual work and/or existential environment, then GRM - the only Artist-in-residence program in Maribor providing continuous presence of international artists - can be to a large extent characterized by the specificity of local cultural-artistic context. Therefore, it favours artistic approaches that form explicit relations with the specific social, historical, political, etc. context of Maribor, local independent cultural producers and the wider community of the city (participatory, site-specific art projects, interventions in public space, etc.). From its outset GRM also has strived that the selected projects are permanently located in the urban landscape, which is also planned for the future.
GRM is extending its focus on the field of so-called experimental curatorship focused on relation between curating and history making, exhibiting hybrid, performative, relational, participatory art practices, exhibiting in non-gallery spaces, curating and feminist/queer theory/feminist and queer art curating, locally bounded art production versus cosmopolitanism of art, circumstances of cultural/art production; rise of a creative class and entrepreneurship of art and culture.

GRM is well connected with local independent cultural producers (individuals and organizations), alternative production and presentational spaces in Maribor, local self-organized collectives of curators (for instance collective Rezidenca Maistrova, focused on non-gallery exhibition spaces like private apartments, public space and more general in-context related art.), connections with “young” scene of art theorists, art critics and curators from Ljubljana etc.

GRM is offering:

- 2 residential ateliers (96 m2 and 76m2, located in the core of the old city centre, equipped with kitchenette, bathroom and sleeping area)
-The residential visits are expected to last for one to two months (in case of more complex projects the duration can be prolonged by mutual agreement)
-Professional assistance and support for the artist and introduction to the local (art) scene by GRM team of curators and producers
-Coverage of production costs up to 300 EUR (in the form of reimbursement of actual costs on presentation of original invoices)
-Coverage of travel costs up to 300 EUR (in the form of reimbursement of actual costs of 1 arrival and 1 departure on presentation of original invoices)
-Scholarship 300 EUR

GRM is expecting:

- Public presentation of the artist's previous work, field of interest and proposed project in the beginning of the residency in a “Meet the resident” event in the form of an artist talk (approx. 45 min long), preferably including visual/video presentation.
Artist has to provide general information about the event for the PR to the GRM team at least 5 days prior. .
- Participation and presence on a guided tour “Interest safari” based on the artist’s field of focus.
- Public presentation of the project created during residential stay in Maribor, or working process resulting from the time in residency - »Project presentation« event. “Project presentation” event is organized in the last week of artist’s residential stay, preferably held in PMM’s gallery space K18 (or elsewhere, if it makes sense because of the specifics of the project). If the project is not finished, so it cannot be presented in the form of exhibition/performance, it can be presented as working process presentation (in the form of a shorter lecture including visual/video/audio presentation). Artist have to provide general information about the event for the PR to the GRM team at least 5 days prior. .

International artist-in-residency platform GuestRoomMaribor: open call 2016

International artist-in-residency platform Guest Room Maribor was established in 2011 by Pekarna Magdalenske mreže (PMM) – organization for non-institutional and independent cultural production in Maribor, Slovenia. PMM originates from the concept of creative and emancipatory physical and mental space, initially meant for activities of production, promotion of production and informal education on all areas of art, culture, youth work, civil society and active citizenship. Its activity is defined by conceptual field of informal culture, subculture, deinstitutionalized culture, contra-culture, independent culture and urban culture, as well as social movements. In the context of contemporary art practices PMM represent an important generator of non-institutional and independent art practices; it encourages socially engaged art, hybrid and experimental artistic expressions and approaches, supports especially young (local) artists etc.

If the primary idea of large number of artist-in-residency programmes is enabling artists to create beyond integration into their usual work and/or existential environment. GRM, the only residency programme in Maribor providing the continuous presence of “foreign” artists, can be to a large extent characterized by the specificity of local cultural-artistic context. Therefore gives GRM from its very beginning privilege to artistic approaches that form more direct connection with the specific social, historical, political, etc. context of Maribor, local independent cultural producers and the wider community of the city (participatory, site-specific art projects, interventions in public space, etc.). From its outset GRM also has strived that the selected projects are permanently located in the urban landscape, which is also planned for the future. Next to mention, GRM main development plan for the future is also establishment of the residency for curators, especially so-called experimental curatorship (focused on relation between curating and history making, exhibiting hybrid, performative, relational, participatory art practices, exhibiting in non-gallery spaces, curating and feminist/queer theory/feminist and queer art curating, locally bounded art production versus cosmopolitanism of art, circumstances of cultural/art production; rise of a creative class and entrepreneurship of art and culture).

GRM has, as already stated, well established connections with local independent cultural producers (individuals and organizations), alternative production and presentational spaces in Maribor, local self-organized collectives of curators (for instance collective Rezidenca Maistrova which organizes exhibitions/happenings in non-gallery exhibition spaces like private apartments, public space etc.), connections with “young” scene of art theorists, art critics and curators from Ljubljana etc.

GRM is offering:

- 2 atelier apartments (measuring 96 m2 and 76m2 that are located in the core of the old city center and are equipped with kitchenette, bathroom and sleeping area) free of charge
-The residencies are expected to last for one to two months, but in case of more complex projects the duration can be prolonged by mutual agreement
-Professional support for the artist and introduction to the local (art) scene (by GRM team of curators and producers)
-Coverage of production costs up to 400 EUR (in the form of reimbursement of actual costs on presentation of original invoices)
-Coverage of travel costs up to 300 EUR (in the form of reimbursement of actual costs on presentation of original invoices)
-Scholarship 200 EUR

GRM is expecting:

- Public presentation of the artist, his previous work, interests and proposed project in the beginning of the residency - “Meet the artist” event. “Meet the resident” event is most oftenly organized in the 2nd week if artist’s residential stay is 1 month long, held in PMM’s gallery space K18 in the city centre in the form of ‘artist talk’ (approximately 45 min long) and including visual/video presentation of his previous work. Artist have to provide general information about the event for the PR to the GRM team at least 5 days earlier.
- Public presentation of the project created during residential stay in Maribor, or working process resulting in the time of residency - »Project presentation« event. “Project presentation” event is most oftenly organized in the last week of artist’s residential stay, preferably held in PMM’s gallery space K18 in the city centre (or elsewhere, if it makes sense because of the project itself). If the project is not finished so it cannot be presented in the form of exhibition/performance, it can be presented as working process presentation (form of shorter lecture including visual/video/audio presentation). Artist have to provide general information about the event for the PR to the GRM team at least 5 days earlier.

International artist-in-residency platform GuestRoomMaribor: open call 2015

1) CURATED RESIDENCIES: open call for artist and/or art collectives (up to 3)

Status: open call 2015 - deadline: 15th June 2015

Introduction: so-called curated residency programme is deeply conditioned by our vision of the point of circulation of cultural workers and art production as well as residency programmes in general. It comes from the assumption that cultural/art production is not only conditioned with socio-political context but has also the potential to influence, relate to or intervene into it. That is why particular approaches like local community-based and/or oriented, hybrids between art and research etc. are preferred or privileged.
The applicants-artist can be from the field of visual art, performance and body art, inter- and transmedial art, land and public art, art activism and interventions in the public space. The residency stay is one to two month long and can start 7 days after publishing this open call and till 31st December 2015.

Application process: Through so-called curated residencies, GuestRoomMaribor tries to establish the basis for highly profiled programme, that is why – in order to avoid non-informative generic motivation letters and artist's self-representations – the application process require project proposal, portfolio and filling the questionnaire about applicant’s personal view on art and culture, local art scene and wider cultural, political, etc. context from which he follows and/or local context he/she intend to intervene through his/her residency project.

Application form, Portfolio and Motivation letter should be send to guestroommaribor@gmail.com until 15th of June 2015.

We offer:

  • studio apartment (size 96 m² or 76 m²),
  • presentation of the artist to local audience / Meet the resident
  • presentation of the process and/or results during residence / Project presentation,
  • support in terms of organization, production, documentation and introduction of local cultural/art producers,
  • refunding of production expenses (up to 400 EUR),
  • refunding of travel costs (up to 300 EUR),
  • scholarship up to 200 EUR.

We require :
  • cooperation with independent cultural/art producers in Maribor,
  • preparation and completion of at least one workshop (preferred but optional),
  • preparation and presence on Meet the resident*,
  • presence on Project presentation.
The jury process:

Hosting artists will be chosen upon the following criteria:

  • original concept,
  • feasibility of the project,
  • participatory,   experimental (in context of structure and/or presentation of a project (e. c. non-gallery spaces) approaches are preferred,
  • possibility of cooperation with the local art scene and community.

Members of the jury:

Lucija Smodiš, producer, curator and artist,
Kaja Kraner, art critic and theoretic,
Petra Kapš, curator, art critic and artist,
Rene Maurin, director and screenwriter,
Marko Ornik, producer, intermedia artist,
Petra Kolmančič, poet, editor and producer.

*Since our programme is based on an assumption that art/cultural production is deeply conditioned and integrated into a socio-political context, our preference is that presentation would not be focused exclusively on resident’s past production and project which he intend to make during the residency stay, but also to presentation of his personal view on art and culture, presentation of local art scene and wider cultural, political, etc. context from which he follows.
